chimpanzee
There's a new addition at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay; an adorable chimpanzee
(Pan troglodytes) born July 23, 2000. The new baby, Mwazi,
weighed about three pounds at birth, and was the first chimp born
at the park in nine years. According to the American Zoo and Aquarium
Association, there were only about a dozen chimp births among all
accredited AZA zoos in 1999. The rare birth of this endangered species
is exciting news to the zoological community and has a positive impact
on the family group of six chimps at Busch Gardens. The baby diversifies
the African adventure park's group of chimps, adding a new dynamic
to their social interactions and behaviors.
